Getting fit

Wednesday Weigh-In Vol. 10. Or: The magic lies in the peas

I had a breakthrough yesterday. I am back in my jeans! Ok, only in those that used to fit the loosest, but it is a start.

Two weeks of stuffing myself with white bread and butter left me feeling a little bloated, to say the least. I didn’t want to be a killjoy, but I also didn’t want to demotivate my dieting self. That’s why I didn’t hit the scales when I came back from our delicious vacation. I am not as brave as Fab Brunette, sorry guys!

On our way back home (13 hours in a car give you a lot of time to talk about all kind of things…), Big M admitted that his clothes became a little tight recently. Being the doting and loyal husband, he too tucked into the good stuff during ‘our’ pregnancy. We remembered having bought a diet book in New York a few years ago – after weekends and weekends and weekends of feasting and celebrating our love and companionship extensively, we made the attempt to change our eating habits. And postponed the whole affair to… well, actually now.

Dr. Ian Smith’s Fat Smash Diet roughly cuts out sugar, white bread, rice and pasta but lets you have plenty of fruit, veggies, brown rice, oats, beans and lentils. There’s fish or meat once a day, smoothies, snacks and even condiments such as ketchup. If you go by the book, it suggests you lose four pounds in each of the first two weeks.

The only problem are the portion sizes. The suggested daily meal plans contain the equivalent of calories I would have usually eaten until 2PM. If I’d stick to this, I am going to faint on a regular basis. So I tweaked the diet and renamed it ‘Fat Smash Supersized’. Also, I replaced the recommended fat free dressing with olive oil (I don’t believe in fat free) and scrapped diet sodas (they are evil, really!). A little bit of sugar every now and then will not ruin my efforts. And losing weight that fast isn’t healthy anyway.

If you should get the book, remember to take it with a pinch of salt – especially ‘Dr. Ian’s tips’ will make you laugh. After cutting your calorific intake to a bare minimum and urging you to exercise 6 out of 7 days for about one hour a day, he recommends on day 2: ‘Start slow.’ If this is slow, I don’t want to know fast…
